New rare earth mines outside China will need manufacturers that can turn their material into magnets. Evolution Metals & Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: EMAT) already has commercial magnet production and has taken delivery of non-China rare earth metal. As mining companies work to bring more supply online, an important question is whether their heavy rare earth output can reach manufacturers such as Evolution Metals in a form they can use.

The American critical materials company manufactures magnets at commercial facilities in South Korea. In June, it announced quality certification with two global Tier-1 electronics manufacturers across six grades of high-performance sintered magnets, including heavy rare earth-containing compositions designed for high temperatures. Evolution Metals reported that the certified grades were already being produced at commercial scale.

Non-China sourcing has also moved into physical delivery. On July 22, Evolution Metals reported receiving five metric tons of neodymium-praseodymium metal, known as NdPr, from SRE Vietnam under its agreement with Japan’s Senri Trading. The company said the material was produced entirely from non-China sources, from ore through oxide production and metal refining. It described the shipment as the first stage of an arrangement intended to increase deliveries alongside its manufacturing capacity.

That gives the company a concrete starting point for expansion: customer-certified magnet production and an established route for obtaining a core magnet ingredient outside China. The next supply-chain developments to follow are whether producers of heavy rare earths can establish similar routes into Evolution Metals’ manufacturing operations, and on what timetable and scale.

Heavy rare earths serve a different purpose from the NdPr already delivered. Elements such as dysprosium and terbium help certain high-performance magnets retain their strength under heat, making them useful in demanding motor applications. Evolution Metals already makes grades containing heavy rare earths; the question is how new sources outside China could support greater production of those grades.

A September 8 Fastmarkets report puts that question in context. Don Swartz, CEO of Rare Earths Americas, said heavy rare earth production outside China was falling behind the magnet capacity being built. He estimated that 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes of magnet capacity was coming online outside China, with further growth through 2030 to 2035 requiring stable material supplies.

Swartz pointed to projects in Brazil and the United States as potential contributors to future supply, while describing the permitting, design and commercial agreements still needed to bring projects into production. For Evolution Metals, the development worth following is whether those emerging sources ultimately translate into heavy rare earth deliveries to its factories. Specific supply agreements, followed by deliveries of usable material, would show whether that potential connection is becoming a commercial relationship.

The route from a deposit to a usable magnet requires more than extraction. Rare earths must be separated and refined into suitable metals, then made into alloys and finished magnets. Sintered magnets are produced by pressing fine alloy powder and heating it into a dense solid before finishing. A producer selling mined material therefore needs access to the processing stages that connect it to a magnet manufacturer.

Evolution Metals is already at that manufacturing end of the chain, and its planned equipment expansion is intended to expand existing production. Its September update confirmed binding purchase orders for 13 additional ULVAC sintered magnet production machines, scheduled for delivery and installation in November 2026. At Pohang, the company targets approximately 10,000 metric tons of annual magnet capacity, including approximately 6,000 metric tons of high-performance sintered magnets, up from approximately 1,000 metric tons of total annual capacity.

Achieving that scale requires commissioning the machinery, completing supporting facility and power work, securing feedstock and working capital, and converting customer demand into shipments. Evolution Metals’ existing production and completed NdPr delivery establish the basis for that expansion. New heavy rare earth supply agreements and actual deliveries from producers outside China would provide the next evidence of how much further that manufacturing business can grow.
