It's of no surprise that saunas are making a comeback in the world of wellness. However, unlike a lot of the fads that hit the headlines, saunas have been used for centuries in Scandinavia. The tradition has been long believed to bring numerous health benefits from healing the body to removing impurities, or simply just to relax. As science has advanced over the decades, so has the evidence of the health benefits of saunas. Clinical evidence shoes saunas can improve cardiovascular health, reduce inflammation, aid muscle recovery and help build a stronger immune system.

One of the longest ever studies on sauna use was published in the JAMA Internal Medicine. Researchers found that  regular sauna use was associated with lower risk of fatal cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality.  In this fascinating study, researchers followed 2,315 middle-aged men across Finland for approximately 21 years, categorizing them into three groups based on their frequency of sauna use: once a week, 2-3 times a week, or 4-7 times a week. Much to everyone's surprise they found that the risk of sudden cardiac death, fatal coronary heart disease, fatal cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality decreased as the frequency of sauna use increased.

The most frequent sauna users had a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death, a 48% lower risk of fatal coronary heart disease, a 50% lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease, and a 40% lower risk of all-cause mortality than the least frequent sauna users.

With data like this, there's little doubt left that saunas can not only serve as some much needed respite from the busy world, but can bring some tremendous benefits for our mind and body.

If you're interested in building a sauna you'll surely have come across the Dundalk Leisure Craft range. A Canadian Manufacturer famous for its DIY sauna kits that can be installed anywhere. Choosing the Right Dundalk Barrel Sauna

When it comes to choosing between these three models it really comes down to two questions!

  1. 1. Will there be more than 4 people using the sauna? If yes, you’ll want the Tranquility.
  2. 2. Do you want a porch to cool off in after your sauna? If yes. you’ll want the Serenity. Otherwise the Harmony is for you!

Whatever choice you make, rest assured that all three options are highly reliable and well constructed to provide you with a luxurious and rejuvenating escape right in your own backyard.

Heater Options: Wood Burning Stoves vs Electric Sauna Heaters

When it comes to choosing between an electric sauna heater and a wood-burning stove, ultimately hinges on the kind of sauna experience you're looking to achieve. If you're a traditionalist craving an authentic Finnish Sauna, the natural warmth, cracking sound of burning embers and gentle scent of wood-smoke might appeal to you. Although wood burning sauna stoves require additional maintenance, such as regular chopping and storing of firewood and cleaning of ashes, the experience is simply unparalleled.

If you're more focused on simplicity and functionality, then electric sauna heaters offer the greatest convenience and ease of use.  With just a flip of a switch, you can quickly heat up your outdoor sauna without any hassle. Electric sauna heaters require less maintenance compared to wood-burning stoves and also provide precise temperature control throughout your sauna session, allowing you to fully enjoy the therapeutic benefits of your custom sauna experience.

Harvia KIP Electric Sauna Heater

Ultimately, whether you choose a wood-burning stove or an electric sauna heater, both options will provide warmth and relaxation in your outdoor sanctuary. It is important to consider the size of your sauna, preferences and maintenance requirements before making a decision that suits you best.

Hot Tubs, Showers and Cold Plunge

For those looking to take their home spa experience to the next level, you might want to consider pairing your sauna with a cold plunge pool or ice bath. As frightening as that may sound, the experience of slipping into the icy cold water after a hot sauna session is delightfully refreshing. There are a host of health benefits associated with cold water immersion, including lower inflammation, deeper sleep, mood improvements and also lowering the heart rate. These benefits are often made even more potent when using a cold plunge in conjunction with a sauna.

If you want to try an ice bath for recovery, there are two great options in the Dundalk Range.

FAQs

How much do outdoor saunas typically cost?

Several variables influence the price of an outdoor sauna room, including its capacity, heater type, additional features and construction materials. The Dundalk Sauna prices ranges from $5,400 for the smallest Barrel Sauna to as much as $11,500 for a full size cabin sauna with a changing room and wood burning heater. Ultimately, the cost depends on your budget and desired features. Don't forget to budget for the necessary sauna accessories such as a thermometer, lighting, sauna bucket and ladle.

Is it possible to use an outdoor sauna during winter?

Absolutely! There's nothing quite like enjoying an invigorating sauna session in the depths of winter. In Norway and Finland it's common practice to use saunas in freezing temperatures. The Dundalk outdoor saunas are made with thick cedar wood which helps insulate the sauna and reduce heat loss in winter. There's options to upgrade all the barrel saunas to include a shingle roof, to help protect them against the elements, ensuring they stay dry and well-ventilated during the colder months.

Are there high costs associated with operating an outdoor sauna?

The costs associated with operating a sauna are primarily the electricity consumption for electric heaters and lighting. Before purchasing an outdoor sauna, it's a good idea to check the heater wattage and electricity requirements. You can estimate the potential impact on your electric bill by considering the sauna's consumption.
